As per the legend behind the Kali worship, long ago the two demons, Ambaran and Amban, bothered the world of Indra, the king of gods and the mother earth. All the heaven and earth peoples have lost all their hopes on conceding many defeats with them on numerous battles. The demons became stronger and stronger. All the sufferers were took shelter along with Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Indra in the Brahmapury sthalam (now called as Ambal), the abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The disturbed gods asked for protection from Lord Shiva. As wished by Lord Shiva, Parvathi Devi gave birth to Maa Kali and ordered her to destroy the two demons, Ambaran and Amban. Thus, Kali was created to save the heaven and the earth from the rising brutality of the demons, Ambaran and Amban. She went on her way to end the war and kill the demons, Ambaran and Amban alongwith Lord Thirumal (Vishnu). After killing the two demons and the entire demon family, the Gods and the whole world worshipped Shri Astapuja Bhadra Kali Amman to stay in this Sthalam forever and as per the requests of them Shri Astapija Bhadra Kali Amman stayed at this Sthalame then Ambaraharam, now the Ambagarathur to shower her blessing on the whole universe.
