Imagine visiting a place where people from almost all parts of the world stay as one, in a state of absolute harmony, trying to learn from each other and grow together as a community. In this town, there’s no religion, no racism and no cash. Just a bunch of open-minded people, for whom nurturing the concepts of humanity, spirituality and world peace are the main priorities of life.
“Nice concept, but it’s difficult to execute such a plan in reality.” Something like this must have been your reaction to this assumption, but the truth is, that one such town does exist, near the beautiful city of Pondicherry, in India.
Auroville is a multi-ethnic township located 6 kilometres away from Pondicherry. It was established in 1968, with the motive of developing an experimental town where people from all parts of the world could live together in peace and progressive harmony, above all politics, religions and nationalities. The foundation of the town was laid down by a disciple of Sri Aurobindo, Mirra Alfassa (known as ‘the Mother’) and as of now, approx 2,500 people are staying in Auroville representing 43 different countries. About one-third of the residents are Indians.
Since this town strongly emphasizes and encourages you to explore and nurture your spiritual side, a majority of its residents are determined yoga enthusiasts. Auroville insists you follow their concept of yoga and meditation, known as ‘The Integral Yoga’, originally taught by Sri Aurobindo himself. Or you can learn and practice various styles of yoga including Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga and Iyengar offered by the residents of the town.
